Maria Skiba

MARIA SKIBA is a singer and scholar, she studied cultural anthropology at the Jagiellonian University in Cracow and at the same time she was busy singing and exploring the realm of music, vocal studies at Royal Conservatory in The Hague followed, where she studied early music singing. She is especially interested in the subject of women in music and with her ensemble Bella Discordia she explores the works of Barbara Strozzi, Francesca Caccini and other women composers/singers of the early 17th century Italy.

Since 2007 she has lived in Berlin working on her favourite repertoire with various early music and contemporary music ensembles and musicians, both in Germany and abroad. She has also taken part in a number of CD, radio and TV recordings, opera and theatre productions as well as research projects resulting in a musical performance.

Within the project Marrying Cultures: Queens Consort and European Identities 1500-1800 she is researching musical influences of the queen consorts of Poland-Lithuania in the 16th and 17th centuries. Her dissertation is being supervised by Professor Dr. Susanne Rode-Breymann at the Research Centre for Music and Gender (Hannover University of Music, Drama and Media).
